ANNALS 2016/2017 AND SUMMARY OF A.G.M. 2017

I have posted a summary of the A.G.M. 2017 held on April 25th and also the Forum Annals for 2016/2017 for member’s attention.

ANNALS 2016/2017

2016

The 39th season ended with 61 members on the records. During the close season Dave Essam left us due to a move to Beverley and our Ruby (40th) season started with 60 members registered.

“Calendar of Meetings” and “Welcome Back” messages were issued to all members. The normal external distribution for information and advertising had also involved Harrogate Library, Harrogate Tourist Information Centre, our local Harlow News Correspondent  (Harrogate Advertiser) Charlotte South and also to our Church Contact Rosalind Crew who includes details on the Harlow Hill Methodist Church Website with its links to the Nidd Valley Methodist Church.

Oct 4th: Richard Pugh was our first new member of the season.

Oct 11th: Michael Jones was added as a new member.

Oct 18th: A further new member Gordon Percy joined us.

Nov 1st: The first special event of our 40th Anniversary season saw us welcome and be entertained by the Daytones Barbershop Group.

Nov 15th: Our occasional guest visitor Roger Howell attended this meeting.

Nov 29th: Ken Selkirk dropped from membership due to ill-health.

Nov 29th: First Open Meeting of the 40th Season took place. 38 members and 9 lady guests in attendance.

Dec 13th: 60 Members and Guests attended an excellent Christmas Lunch at The Ascot House Hotel. A charitable collection raised £266-50 which would be split between Yorkshire Air Ambulance and St. Michael’s Hospice.

In a special presentation Programme Secretary John Taylor was awarded an Honorary Life Membership to overwhelming acclaim from those in attendance.

2017

Jan 10th: Acknowledgement from Yorkshire Air Ambulance re Xmas Charity donation.

Jan 17th: Second Open Meeting of the season and Ray Coggan Memorial Meeting with 36 members and 9 lady guests in attendance. Alun Pugh returned to complete his talk on “A Journey Along The Leeds–Liverpool Canal Part Two”.

Jan 24th: Acknowledgement received from St. Michael’s Hospice re Xmas Charity donation….sent initially to Harrogate Men’s Forum!!

Jan 31st: Joined by new member Peter Wilson and guest Keith Acum.

Feb 7th: John Taylor gives a potted history of Forum in his talk “Forty Years On” part of the Anniversary Programme.

Feb 14th: Third Open Meeting of the season with record attendance of fifty-one members and guests. (forty members plus eleven lady guests)

Feb 21st: Members Morning with excellent contributions from Mike Tutt; Richard Wright; Mike Cochrane and Terry Byrne.

Mar 21st: New member Keith Acum adds to our numbers.

April 4th: 40th Anniversary Lecture by Malcolm Neesam. (Samson Fox)

Apr 25th: 40th A.G.M. held.

May 2nd: 40th Anniversary Lunch at the Ascot House Hotel. 48 in attendance.

Season concludes with 64 members registered on records.

SUMMARY OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON APRIL 25th 2017

Outgoing Chairman Peter Staples opened the meeting expressing his thanks to members for their support during the year and then handed control of the proceedings to President Reverend Christine Gillespie.

ATTENDANCE: President Reverend Christine Gillespie and 32 members present.

APOLOGIES: 6 apologies received from members.

MINUTES: Minutes of the 39th Annual General Meeting agreed correct and signed by President. No amendments, corrections or matters arising.

GENERAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: At close of previous season (2015/2016) 61 members were registered on Forum records.

–Dave Essam left us during the summer recess.

—5 new members joined during the last season.

—1 member left our database as he could no longer attend.

At the close of the season (2016/2017) 64 members were left recorded on our books although there are a number we are unlikely to see again due to age/ infirmity.

Continued publicity through Harrogate Advertiser/ Church Website Links, Harrogate Library and Tourist Information Centre as well as our own Website. Personal member advocacy still best recruiter and two Programme of Meeting cards issued to help facilitate this.

PROGRAMME SECRETARY’S REPORT: Another year of strong attendances and an all time record at February 14th Open Meeting of 51. Charitable Donations totalled an impressive £645.

Special Anniversary events were well supported– Daytones Group and Malcolm Neesam and good reception afforded to Professor Dixon (Ilkley Water Cure) and Michael Duncombe (Musical Memories of the 50’s and 60’s). Open Meetings and Members Morning  also well established and received.

Thanks to all Tuesday Helpers and Officers and appreciative of Honorary Life Membership Award.

New Season commences Tuesday October 3rd 2017.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Very adequate Bank Balance of around £495 going into new season.

Donation to Church for room usage proposed and agreed at £850.

Secretarial Honorariums (2) amounting to £100 proposed and agreed.

No increase in fees/subs in next season

Discussion re funding defibrillator for Church Premises— to be agreed by Church and Forum Members to consider how we can support if it goes ahead.

ANNALS 2015/2016

2015

The 38th season ended with 63 members registered on Forum records. During the close season the Forum was sorry to hear of the death of Honorary Life Member Reg Jackson at the great age of 101 years and 9 months. A founder member of the Forum (38 years membership), twice Chairman and giver of twenty-six (official) talks. Whilst sad to record his passing he was the oldest member ever of the Forum and had demonstrated a remarkably well lived life when attending the Forum in  October 2013 in celebration of his centenary year and he will be remembered fondly by Forum members.

The revised membership total for the start of the 39th season was therefore 62 members.

“Calendar of Meetings” and a “Welcome Back Slip” had been circulated to all members. Oct 6th: The first meeting of the season saw two new members join –Tony Bills and Robert Bradwell.

Oct 13th: three new members added to the membership–Terry Byrne; David Jackson and John Tyreman

Oct 20th: meeting with a charity presentation re: St. Michael’s Hospice and a total amount of £118–50 collected for them.

Nov 3rd: The popular and now annual Members’ Morning –5 Speakers from amongst the membership.

Nov 10th: new member Leslie Parkes joins us.

Nov 17th: first Open Meeting of the season saw eight lady guests bolster attendance to a very healthy forty-one which also include new member Peter Wood

Dec 8th: this meeting saw a record attendance of fifty members.

Dec 15th: a very successful Christmas Lunch at Ascot House Hotel with another record attendance of seventy-one members and guests. The Charitable Collection of £370 was also an all time high and would be passed to a fellow community association Harrogate 20th Scout Group who are raising funds to provide a new Scout Hut.

2016

Jan 19th: second Open Meeting of the season saw nine lady guests join with forty-one members.

Feb 2nd: Update on former member Brian Blakey now in Southlands Care Home Ripon Road Harrogate. Reverend Christine Gillespie completed her second ” President’s Morning”.

Feb 9th: charitable collection taken for Aid to Eastern Europe (John Shackleton) raising £102-40 plus Speaker’s Fee of £30.

Mar 8th: Third Open Meeting of season with thirty-seven members and eleven lady guests.

Mar 22nd: John Stott removed from membership…no longer attending.

Apr 12th:Philip Sladdin removed from membership due to ill-health.

Apr 19th:Dennis Jennings removed from membership as moving to Bakewell.

April 25th: Death of Ken Lupton advised.

April 26th: A.G.M. Informed of recent death of former member Stuart Metcalfe. Season concludes with 61 members registered on Forum Records.

May 3rd : Members’ Spring Lunch at Bay Horse Goldsborough.

 

 

SUMMARY OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON 26TH APRIL 2016

ATTENDANCE: President Rev. Christine Gillespie and 24 members present.

APOLOGIES: 12 apologies received from members.

MINUTES: Minutes of 38th Annual General Meeting agreed correct and signed by President. No amendments, corrections or matters arising.

CHAIRMAN& GEN. SECRETARY REPORT: Chairman Neil Ramshaw thanked officers and members for their support and for making his year as Chairman a pleasant experience.

At the close of the previous season 63 members on Forum Records were reduced to 62 at the start of the 39th season due to Reg Jackson’s death during the summer.

—-7 new members joined during the last season

—-8 members were removed from membership which sadly included two further deaths. (Malcolm Rawdon and Ken Lupton)

At the close of the season (26/4/2016) 61 members were registered on Forum Records.

Continuing publicity through Harrogate Advertiser/Church Website Links/Harrogate Library and Tourist Information Centre along with our own Website. Advocacy from Members is still our best recruiting agent.

PROGRAMME SECRETARY’S REPORT: Attendance Records continue to be broken with an average weekly attendance of 38. Highest attendance of 50 at an all male meeting; record numbers of “guests” at an Open Meeting; biggest Christmas Lunch gathering of 70 and record Charitable Lunch Collection there of £370.

Interesting talks from regular and new Speakers. Major contributions from our own members including Richard Wright (Gambia); David Siddans (Traffic Jams) and Judge Derek Clarkson (Curiosities) not forgetting John Taylor who shared some recollections of Schooldays. Another successful Members’ Morning with 5 Speakers providing eclectic entertainment and our annual President’s  Morning providing enjoyable education.

Thanks to all Tuesday Helpers, Officers and not least Members for attendance and friendly attitude which makes Harlow Men’s Forum so welcoming.

Charitable Donations amounted to £878-80 made up of £250 to various Speakers who fund their own good causes; £370 collected at Christmas Lunch for 20th Harrogate Scout Group and three Meeting Collections. (St. Michael’s Hospice; John Shackleton–Eastern Europe Ambulance and R.N.L.I.)

TREASURER’S REPORT: Very healthy Bank Balance going forward–£659-49 (confirmed by Treasurer after meeting).

Donation to Church for room usage proposed and agreed at £825.

Further Donation of £100 proposed and agreed to Church for rear porch refurbishment work.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS 2016/2017 (as detailed below)

Malcolm Wood spoke persuasively and exhorted members to consider taking office particularly as Chairman.

Vice Chairman His Honour Judge Derek Clarkson and Second Vice Chairman Michael Cochrane proposed, seconded and agreed by acclaim at meeting. All other Officers to continue in role as agreed by Meeting Attendees.

The position of Welfare Officer has been vacant for some time and a decision taken to discontinue the role. Any such matters arising can be brought to the Forum’s attention by any aware member where appropriate.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS: 2016 Christmas Lunch Charitable Collection to be split between St Michael’s Hospice and The Air Ambulance.

ANNALS 2014/2015

2014

The 38th season opened with 60 members registered on Forum records. Forum members had been saddened to learn of the death of Bill Blades in June–Bill had been a recent Chairman of the Forum and a stalwart in the kitchen team and would be much missed.

“Calendar of Meetings” and a “Welcome Back Slip”  had been circulated to all members. October 7th: The first meeting of the season saw two new members join… Mike Tutt and Jim Wilson.

October 14th: A further new member enrolled … George Thomas.

October 28th: Two new members joined us … Les Simpson and Geoff Harrop. This was also the ever popular “Members Morning” with contributions from John Taylor, Richard Wright, Ken Lupton, Roy Smith and Malcolm Wood.

November 11th: The Forum met on Remembrance Day and observed a period of silence in respect to those who fell in the hostilities.

November 18th: Two new members added to the books … John Stott and Fred Spurrier. This meeting saw 44 attendees … a record for an all male audience!!

November 25th: Another new member Michael Hawkins joined us. This was an Open Meeting with seven lady guests in attendance. It also saw Angela Henson a regular and popular travel speaker at the Forum over the years give her last talk to us before retiring.

December 9th: New member Ron Colquitt increased our numbers.

December 16th: Christmas Lunch at the Ascot House Hotel with a record fifty-nine members and guests attending and where our new President Reverend Christine Gillespie attended her first Forum event. Members and guests generously contributed to an all time high charitable collection of £300 which was to be split between Harrogate Homeless Project, Solar Aid to provide solar lamps for African children and to help finance the studies of a Tanzanian girl.

2015

January 6th: The New Year started with a further new member to the assembly … David Siddans.Written acknowledgements had been received from  the charities supported by the Christmas Lunch collection. The Forum considered and agreed in principle to the purchase of a digital projector with the possibility of grant support.

January 13th: Sadly the death was reported of long-standing Forum Member Alan Norton. A new member Graham Smith signed up. Seven members were removed from membership for various valid reasons.

January 20th: Open Meeting and “The Ray Coggan Memorial Meeting” to which six lady guests were in attendance.

February 3rd: A new member Allan Ridley was added. One member removed from membership. A visitor in attendance Roger Howell.

February 17th: A visitor Peter Wells was welcomed to this meeting.

February 24th: President’s Morning … Reverend Christine Gillespie makes her debut appearance at the Forum.

March 10th: Forum’s 1000th Meeting and in attendance the Mayor of Harrogate Councillor Jim Clark who also is our local Council representative.

March 17th: Church Jumble Sale on 28th supported by member donations.

March 24th: Open Meeting which saw record member audience and record overall attendance.(48)

April 14th: New member Dennis Jennings joins Forum numbers.

April 21st: One member dropped from records. Last normal meeting of season with Professor Martin Curzon making a welcome return as Speaker.

April 28th: A.G.M. and season concludes with 63 members registered on Forum records

 

SUMMARY OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON 28TH APRIL 2015

Attendance: President Rev. Christine Gillespie and 26 members present.

Apologies: 10 apologies received from members.

Minutes: Minutes of 37th Annual General Meeting agreed correct and signed by President. No amendments, corrections or matters arising.

Chairman’s Report: Chairman Michael Cochrane gave details from his report and expressed his pleasure at having been Chairman this last year.

General Secretary’s Report: 60 members on record at close of previous season.

—13 new members joined during this last season.

—10 members were dropped from membership, sadly this included 2 deaths.

At close of season (28/04/2015) 63 members remained on Forum records.

Continuing publicity through Harrogate Advertiser/Church Website Links/ Harrogate Library and Tourist Information Centre and Forum Website. “Word of Mouth” recommendation from members remains our best advertisement.

Programme Secretary’s Report: All Forum Records for attendance broken!!–Average attendance 35; highest attendance at all male meeting 44 and highest attendance at Open Meeting of 48. Record attendance (59) and charity collection at Ascot House Christmas Lunch raised £300 and similar charitable contributions for Speakers good causes meant over £600 raised in total. Varied programme of talks included two on First World War, talks from regular visitors and Forum members and some encouraging debut appearances. Mayor of Harrogate attended our 1000th meeting.

Treasurers Report: Indicative Receipts and Payments Account shows a continuing but reduced surplus (£421) with a deficit of £100 for current period caused by purchase of digital projector. No concerns however and fees/subs to remain at current levels next season. Increase in rent donation to Church by £10 to £810 and contribution of £85 to upgrade Speakers in Church Hall agreed by meeting.

Election of Officers: As detailed below with Peter Staples now in 2nd Vice Chairman position. All Officer appointments agreed by meeting. There remains a vacancy for Welfare Officer.

Malcolm Wood thanked Officers for their running of the Forum which was supported by the President and added to the appreciation shown to individual officers and as a collective by the attending members…this was appreciated!!

39th Season of Harlow Men’s Forum will open on Tuesday October  6th 10a.m for 1030a.m

 


ANNALS 2013/2014

2013

The previous season had concluded with 61 members registered on Forum records. Sadly during the summer Peter Jackson son of Honorary Life Member Reg Jackson and a member for 3 years died suddenly in the month of August. The death was also advised of former member of nearly 20 years and a past Chairman namely John Teasdale just after his 90th birthday.

At the start of the new season therefore on October 1st the Forum had 60 members on its records all of whom had been issued with Calendar of Meetings and a “Welcome Back ” slip.

Rosalind Crew our Church contact had been forwarded a Calendar of Meetings for inclusion on the Harlow Hill Church Website with its links to the Nidd Valley Methodist circuit.

Calendars of Meetings had also been distributed to Harrogate Library, Harrogate Tourist Information Centre and our Press contact in the Harrogate Advertiser Charlotte South.

The first meeting on October 1st was an Open Meeting  and a”special” celebration led by John Taylor whose title “Centenarians Then And Now” also acted as a tribute to our own Honorary Life Member Reg Jackson who had achieved the epic age of 100 years , the first Forum Member to so do and who appeared at this meeting to reminisce on his long and rich life. To the delight of members he spoke well and with great clarity and recollection on his life and career from an early age and appeared in remarkable condition for such a magnificent age!!

A new member Andy Grant joined the Forum at this meeting.

October 15th— Doug Hay was welcomed back after a long absence due to ill health.

October 22nd— A visitor Ian Blyth  attended this meeting and became a Forum Member the following week. Advance notice had been received of a November 6th meeting at Harrogate Library relating to “Harrogate Remembers the First World War” which would be celebrated in 2014.

November 5th —The Forum received a short presentation from Rachel of “Wall to Wall” T.V. regarding a proposed reality B.B.C. show it was looking for participants for —it seemed to involve owning up to past misdeeds of long standing and making amends with those affected!! Not really applicable to upstanding Harlow Forum Members.

November 19th—Attendance of a guest Graham Burcher son of member Ken Burcher.

November 26th—New member Ken Lupton joined our numbers.

December 10th—Christmas Lunch at Ascot House Hotel thoroughly enjoyed by 52 attendees. Charitable collection for Jennyruths Workshops raised £170.

2014

January 7th—Two new members John Corby and Malcolm Rawdon added to our increasing throng.

January 14th—Second Open Meeting of the season. “Thank you” acknowledgement received from Jennyruths Workshops regarding Christmas donation.

John Taylor gave updates on both Reg Jackson and Alan Norton who had suffered health issues and domestic moves which would curtail their Forum attendances.

January 28th—President’s Morning–Rev. Mark Godfrey speaker for the morning

Congratulations were given to Bill McNicol on his recent 90th birthday.

January 30th—Harrogate Theatre visit (backstage tour). Enjoyed by a select group of 16/17 members and guests.

February 4th—Visitor in audience Roger Howell.

John Taylor sadly announced the death of former Secretary and current Honorary Life Member George Mountford after a stroke. (9/10 members subsequently attended his funeral)

February 18th—Ken Roberts congratulated on his forthcoming 90th birthday and warmly responded back to the gathered Forum Members.

This meeting saw Mr Wallace Sampson Harrogate District Borough Council Chief Executive address the Forum.

February 25th—Ken Burcher was reported to be in hospital following a heart attack but due for imminent discharge.

John Taylor advised members of the forthcoming Family History at Harrogate Showgrounds on March 15th.

March 4th—Marie Curie Cancer Fund had requested donations of old bicycles as part of a fund raising appeal.

New member Richard Wright added to the Forum’s numbers.

March 18th— Third Open Meeting of the season and also the Ray Coggan Memorial Meeting.

March 25th—5 members dropped from membership for various reasons but none had attended any meetings during current season.

April 1st—Ken Burcher back after his recuperation.

Forum advised that former Chairman Roy Howard was not well and former Registrar Denis Smith was in hospital but sent everyone his good wishes.

April 8th— Lou Consetine back at Forum having returned from U.S.A. Roy Howard now in hospital.

MEMBERS MORNING–talks given by Malcolm Wood; Michael Williams; Keith Wadd and Michael Cochrane.

April 15th— Advised of death of Elsie Jackson at 98 the wife of our centenarian Honorary Life Member Reg Jackson..they had been married for 75 years.

Last normal meeting of 37th season …Save the Children Charity.

April29th—A.G.M.

May 6th— Informal lunch at Smith’s Arms Beckwithshaw.

 

 

 

SUMMARY OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON 29TH APRIL 2014

ATTENDANCE: President Rev. Mark Godfrey and 23 members present.

APOLOGIES: 8 apologies received from members.

MINUTES: minutes 0f 36th meeting agreed correct and signed by President. No amendments, changes or matters arising.

GENERAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: 61 members at close of previous season but regrettably 1 death during close season and 37th season started therefore with 60 members on books.

—6 new members joined during season.

— 1 death sadly reported.

—5 members dropped from membership.

At close of season membership remained at 60 members.

Continuing publicity through Harrogate Advertiser/ Church Website Links/ Harrogate Library and Tourist Information Centre and out own Forum Website.

PROGRAMME SECRETARY’S REPORT: Average attendance 32/33 during season.

Highlights included Reg Jackson’s 100th Birthday Meeting and Derek Clarkson’s Open Meeting Talk which equalled attendance record of 44. Also visited by Harrogate Borough Council Chief Executive Wallace Sampson in February.

£300 Charitable donations through direct contributions or via speaker’s fees.

Open Meetings and Members Mornings now agreed as permanent part of Annual Programme.

No change to length of Programme Season.

Ascot House Christmas lunch booked for third Tuesday in December (16th).

TREASURERS REPORT: Indicative receipts and payments account shows a continuing healthy surplus with costs continuing to be well controlled.

Increase in rent donation to Church (£20) agreed –up to £800.

Thanked Registrar Derek Simpson for his weekly efforts.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS: President Rev. Mark Godfrey was standing down after this meeting due to Church reorganization within Harrogate District and it was agreed he would be succeeded by Rev. Christine Gillespie.

The President thanked outgoing Chairman Roger Bancroft and all the officers for their work which contributed to such a successful Forum.

LAST EVENT OF THE SEASON: Informal lunch organized by John Taylor at Smith’s Arms Beckwithshaw on Tuesday May 6th at 12p.m.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

—No 2nd Vice Chairman appointed –hoped to fill at a later date.

—Roy Howard proposed as Honorary Life Member and elected by audience acclaim.

—“Vote of Thanks” coordinator and potential rota for this task discussed—David Essam to liaise with John Taylor at start of new season.

CONCLUDING REMARKS:

—Next season (38th) of Forum will start with first meeting on Tuesday October 7th 10a.m. for 1030a.m.

—Michael Cochrane (Incoming Chairman) thanked President Rev. Mark Godfrey for his contributions to the Forum.

 

Summary of Annual General Meeting held 30th April 2013

ATTENDANCE: President Rev. Mark Godfrey in chair and 23 members present.

APOLOGIES: 8 apologies from members received.

Minutes of 35th meeting agreed correct and signed.

MATTERS ARISING: Letters of appreciation from the two Honorary Life Members appointed had been received.

GENERAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: Membership increased from 49 members at start of season to 61 at end of this A.G.M.

Two deaths sadly reported during last season–John Pearce and Jim Bromhead.

Forum Blog continues to be successful and useful means of communication/publicity.

Other good publicity from Harrogate Advertiser/ Church Website links/ Harrogate Library and Harrogate Tourist Information Centre.

New Tablecloth made its debut at first meeting in January!!

PROGRAMME SECRETARY’S REPORT: Average attendance over 30 for meetings this last season ahead of the 28 it had been for many years.

Highest total of Members/Guests at Open Meeting/Ray Coggan Memorial Lecture given by Judge Derek Clarkson was 40.

Tribute to Brian Blakey for his membership and work as a member but sadly no longer attending due to illness.

Loss of John Pearce commented on.

Volunteers for “Votes of Thanks” for Speakers would be welcomed.

Forum responsible via Speakers and Direct donations for £450 in charitable contributions.

Open Meetings and Members Meetings to continue in new season.

Ascot House booked for Christmas lunch on second Tuesday in December 2013 (10th) –Charity Collection agreed by meeting to go to Jennyruth Workshops.

Chairman Bill Blades thanked for his efforts as Chairman as were John Clark and the Catering team. Also Mike South for his weekly setting up of meeting room.

John Taylor thanked for another excellent years programme of Speakers.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Indicative receipts and payments account shows a continuing healthy surplus with sound cost controls

No increase in Annual fees or Subscriptions for the next(37th) season.

£30 donated to Church towards purchase of Lapel Microphone–agreed by Meeting.

Annual Visit: John Taylor to lead a group of Forum Members on a visit to Ripon Museums on 7th May 2013.

Any Other Business:

Provision of Membership Database Information discussed at meeting but significant majority against it being provided.

Forum Membership limit of 60 dispensed with as agreed by meeting—would be revisited if attendance figures significantly increase in future.

Request for 5/10 minutes at end of each Forum Meeting to consider items of common interest or where support/expertise could be provided. Meeting agreed it was a worthy idea and will be trialled for 2 months in new season by Chairman under “Any Other Business” agenda item.
